Students visit MEDINA to learn about drug discovery and bioactive molecules from microbial natural products
A group of students from the Biochemistry Degree at the University of Malaga recently visited MARBLES partner MEDINA's labs to learn about the valuable research being conducted on the discovery of new drugs and bioactive molecules from microbial natural products within the framework of several European projects including MARBLES, HOTBIO, MAGic-MOLFUN and EUREMAP.
MEDINA is a non-profit research organisation focusing its research activities on the discovery of new bioactive natural products from its unique microbial collections (190.000 strains) and natural products libraries (200.000 samples) taking advantage of its High-throughput satellite (HTS) capacities, assay development and validation tools as high capacity screening centre of fellow MARBLES partner the European infrastructure EU-OPENSCREEN (EU-OS).
Within MARBLES, MEDINA coordinates WP5 and is involved in the generation of focused libraries and the activity profiling of the libraries of extracts and compounds generated in the project, as well as the scale-up production of nominated candidates for the bioprocess development and validation of new product applications. Within WP4, MEDINA is isolating and structurally elucidating new bioactive candidate compounds.
