MARBLES law professor elected to the Royal Society of Edinburgh

MARBLES law professor, Abbe Brown is among the new Fellows of the Royal Society of Edinburgh (RSE), recognised as being outstanding individuals whose contributions are shaping society in Scotland and beyond! The RSE is Scotland’s National Academy for ‘the advancement of learning and useful knowledge’ and provides independent expert advice to policymakers and inspire the next generation of innovative thinkers.
Abbe said: “I am honoured to become a Fellow of the Royal Society Edinburgh. I look forward to contributing to its ongoing impact in addressing key societal challenges, in Scotland and more widely.” Abbe is a Professor of Intellectual Property (IP) Law with MARBLES partner the University of Aberdeen (UNIABDN). Her work examines how IP intersects with other legal domains and how this might affect important societal issues like ocean governance, health, digital technology, disability and climate change. She maintains strong links with the legal profession and with policymaking in Scotland.

They represent excellence in their fields and will reinforce our ability to tackle the challenges that Scotland, and indeed the wider world, faces now and in the future".
Within MARBLES Abbe and her colleagues provide pragmatic advice based on good scientific practice and IP law in the areas of marine biotechnology and intellectual property rights (IPR), in particular with reference to the Convention on Biodiversity (CBD) and its Nagoya Protocol, as well as marine genetic resources (MGRs) and the biodiversity of areas beyond national jurisdiction (BBNJ Agreement).
