Harnessing marine biodiversity: MARBLES Summit celebrates innovation and collaboration

The MARBLES Stakeholder Summit, held at the prestigious Naturalis Biodiversity Center in Leiden, the Netherlands marked a defining moment for marine bio-innovation, bringing together leaders from industry, research and policy communities to celebrate the achievements of the EU-funded MARBLES project and chart a bold course for the future.
Under the theme “Transforming Marine Biodiversity into Innovation,” the one-day event provided a dynamic platform for collaboration, insight-sharing and forward-thinking discussion on how marine biodiversity can fuel sustainable solutions across sectors including biopharma, aquaculture, agrochemicals and the wider blue economy.
As the culmination of the MARBLES project, the Summit highlighted how five years of pioneering research have advanced marine drug discovery and unlocked new pathways from ocean biodiversity to real-world application. Set within the inspiring surroundings of project partner Naturalis — a global leader in biodiversity research — the event reinforced the importance of preserving and leveraging marine ecosystems as engines of innovation.
Participants gained exclusive insight into MARBLES’ scientific breakthroughs, including novel bioresources, advanced discovery tools and streamlined workflows that are already shaping the future of marine biotechnology.

Bridging science, industry and policy
A key strength of the Summit was its ability to connect diverse stakeholders across disciplines. Attendees included representatives from aquaculture and marine biotechnology, agrochemical and biopharmaceutical industries, policy and regulatory institutions as well as academic and research organisations. Through a series of talks, interactive panel discussions and networking breaks, the Summit fostered meaningful dialogue on how to accelerate the journey from discovery to market while ensuring sustainability, ethical governance and long-term impact.
The morning session, “MARBLES Highlights: Marine Drug Discovery,” showcased the consortium’s cutting-edge research achievements. Leading scientists presented breakthroughs in marine bioresources, alongside innovative screening technologies and data-driven approaches that are redefining drug discovery pipelines. Engaged discussions and Q&A sessions provided a deeper understanding of how these scientific advances can translate into tangible applications, from new therapeutics to environmentally sustainable solutions.
In the afternoon, attention turned to “MARBLES Legacy: Industry and Policy,” exploring how the project’s outcomes can be sustained and scaled beyond its lifespan. Industry leaders shared insights on commercialisation pathways and market readiness, while policy and regulatory experts addressed the frameworks needed to support marine innovation responsibly. Discussions also highlighted key lessons learned throughout the project and identified opportunities for future collaboration, funding and cross-sector partnerships. The emphasis was clear: unlocking the full value of marine biodiversity requires continued cooperation between science, industry and policy.
Catalysing collaboration and opportunity - Looking ahead
Networking was at the heart of the Summit, with dedicated time and space for participants to connect, exchange ideas and build partnerships. These interactions underscored the growing momentum behind marine bio-innovation and the shared commitment to translating research into impact. From early-stage innovators to established industry leaders, the Summit created fertile ground for new collaborations that will extend well beyond the MARBLES project itself.
The MARBLES Stakeholder Summit successfully demonstrated that marine biodiversity is not only a vital natural asset but also a powerful driver of sustainable innovation. By bringing together key actors across the ecosystem, the event has helped lay the groundwork for the next generation of marine biotechnology initiatives.
As MARBLES concludes, its legacy continues through strengthened partnerships, new opportunities for investment and a clear roadmap toward harnessing ocean resources responsibly. The message from Leiden was unmistakable: the future of innovation lies beneath the waves and through collaboration, it is within reach!
