Algae4IBD Summer School: Discovering novel bioactive compounds in algae
Fellow AIMS Cluster project, Algae4IBD is organising a two week interdisciplinary summer school for early career researchers and junior industry professionals covering how to discover novel bioactive compounds in algae and develop functional food and pharmaceuticals.
Course details:
When: 15–26 July 2024
Where: CCMAR, University of Algarve, Faro, Portugal
Who: PhD students, early post-docs, young entrepreneurs and start-ups
Fee: €610
Application deadline: 17 April 2024
The summer school will address the necessity to look into sustainable and unexplored natural sources to find novel bioactive molecules for functional food and disease treatment. Using the example of algae and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), the course will explore the diverse aspects of compound discovery and product development:
- What is the potential of macroalgae, microalgae and cyanobacteria and how to best cultivate them?
- How to improve algae strains and increase compound extraction to an industrial scale?
- What bioactivity tests are established and how do they work?
- How to identify compounds?
- What to consider when developing algae-based products?
- How to cook delicious algae-based food?
- How to pave a career?
